The Seven C’s represent the seven most important success factors for project execution. The philosophy of the Seven C’s is expressed in the logo, which indicates the relationship between the C’s together forming a circle. Only attention to all different C’s leads to a good and balanced project result.
Projects have been executed for market leading companies such as Teijin Aramid, FrieslandCampina, Twence, Gasunie, HVC Groep, and AVR (references).
Commitment is required from all parties involved in a project: management, project team, users/operations, suppliers, engineers, etc. Clear project targets are needed such as quality requirements, required results, time schedule, costs/savings, working methods and project scope. Commitment with regard to safety seems obvious, but that is not always the case.
Cooperation is a basic element in reaching successful projects. A project needs to be organized to encourage cooperation, without losing focus on project responsibilities. Cooperation means support, support results in strengthening the project.
Communication is probably the most complicated success factor. Clear information and communication lines, handling changes and developments, and communication on different levels are challenging. An escalation route in case of problems is an important element. Also information to different stakeholders is an area of attention.
Creativity does not seem a first priority in technical projects with structures and procedures. However creativity leads to smarter, better and more effective solutions and can reduce costs and risks in projects.
Control is an essential element in projects. Control of relevant project data and knowledge of design status, costs, progress, quality and risks is required. Checks on efficient exchange of information are also an area of attention.
Change is an element not to be underestimated, especially for the client and its operations. Realization of projects gives significant changes in the existing operation with potential resistances and threats. Thorough involvement in an early project stage, and even more when reaching project completion, remains an area of attention.
All parties involved in a project need to have the capability suitable for their contribution, especially suppliers, engineers but also the project team members. Careful selection of these parties is required, and regular verification of their performance is needed.
